Aschiana Foundation works with children who cannot attend school because they have to work to support their families. Most of these children have lost their parents, and become the sole breadwinner of their family. They work on the streets selling matches, cigarettes, chewing gums and polishing shoes. Afghan Youth Voices Festival and Aschiana collaborated to run a three-day workshop that was going to be both educational and fun. Around 20 students participated in the project to learn graffiti art, skateboarding and photography. Skate-Aid provided support for the skateboarding side of things. Qasem Foushanji worked with them to create beautiful graffiti paintings inside the wall of Ashiana Foundation and two other locations in Kabul. The kids took to it immediately taking the spray bottle and painting their big ideas in lovely color. All of it was done, legally, in secure areas and with the permission of the people who ran businesses in the premises. Mirwais Mohsen, of Afghan Youth Voices Festival who also volunteers for Skate-Aid, taught the children how to skate. Again, they were quick to learn, and skated around the city taking pictures with their disposable cameras as they went around. It was hot and everyone was sweating, but they all said they enjoyed it very much.
